The Sahara Desert - MoroccoThe Sahara is the world’s second largest desert (second to Antarctica), over 9,000,000 km² (3,500,000 mi²), located in northern Africa and is 2.5 million years old. The entire land area of the United States of America would fit inside it. Its name, Sahara, is an English pronunciation of the word for desert in Arabic. The Sahara starts south east of Morocco and extends into Algeria and its neibouring countries. The closest city from the desert is Ouarzazate (Warzāzāt) (called The door of the desert) is a Moroccan city at the southern part of the country. It is situated at the crossroads of the roads of Marrakech and Agadir. It hosts the biggest movie studio in the world. Several historical movies were shot on those studios (e.g. Cleopatra, Kundun, Gladiator and lately Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven).
Some excursions into the Sahara Desert start from the city, thus the label The door of the desert. The place to see the highest dunes in Morocco is called Merzouga.
